A little bit about me
From walking tours to coach tours with you you can be guaranteed a bespoke day of your own.
Hello, I am Duane Fitzsimons, regional tour guide for Lecale. Welcome to my website for my tours in the heart of County Down. This is Saint Patrick's Country and it has been home to my family for centuries.
After graduating from architecture in 2010 I set up a voluntary consultancy with a group of colleagues. One of our projects was the creation of the Strangford and Portaferry heritage trails. Since then, telling the story of our heritage has been one of my life's passions.
The Lecale Peninsula Tours began as a heritage blog gaining traction on Facebook and Twitter. When an opportunity to become a tour guide came up I seized it with both hands. On 7 August 2015 I led my inaugural tour in Strangford and Portaferry.
Working for the Ulster Federation of Rambling Clubs I enjoy promoting sustainable recreation in the countryside. I am also a director of Ardglass Development Association and have established a festival - Biggerféis - which celebrates the life and legacy of my personal hero Francis Joseph Bigger.
In 2015 I wrote my first book - Under the shade of Our Lady's sweet image. In doing this I unearthed the true legacy of John de Courcy in Lecale by piecing together the story of religion in the area. In 2017 I honoured to be invited by the Northern Ireland Tourist Guide Association to lecture the new blue badge guides on Saint Patrick.
For each of my tours I bring my own collection of artefacts. These are from the family archive which is 250 years old! They help to provide you with the most tangible experience while exploring our heritage.
